Practical Routes to OA Monographs - Collaboration, Innovation and Support online seminar 2023
Tuesday 22nd August and Thursday 24th August
The seminar will explore the current landscape of support for Open Access Monograph publishing. With new funder requirements around openness for books being introduced in the UK and other countries, this topic is increasingly important to Librarians, publishers and intermediaries, and is undergoing rapid development.
The seminar will include a variety of case studies showcasing and exploring the current framework for Open Access monograph publishing in the UK and Europe. It will investigate the diversity of Open Access monograph publishers, as well as how OA book and chapter provision has evolved over time. The session will also highlight several new collaborative sector initiatives looking to support and foster open access monograph publishing, as well as several that have a particular focus on expanding the promotion and discovery of open monographs.
The course will also look to compare and contrast approaches to monograph provision and support by country, with case studies from the UK and Sweden.

This year’s theme is “Everything everywhere all at once”: keeping up with our user’s information needs in the age of open scholarship and TikTok. We believe this theme encapsulates the challenges and opportunities we face in an increasingly interconnected and fast-paced world. We encourage all interested individuals to submit their proposals here, this is an excellent opportunity to share your insights, experiences, and research with an engaged and diverse audience.
Areas of interest
As the world has emerged from the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the pace of change seems to be at an all-time high. This free UKSG Forum will explore the many facets of change affecting scholarly publishing today.
We are seeking proposals for presentations and lightning talks that explore the changing needs of our users and how we as a sector may respond. Topics might include (but are not limited to): sustainability, leading change in equity, diversity and inclusion, AI, open research, and new forms of scholarly content.
We would be interested to hear your views on questions such as:
- How can we provide content, services and support that meets the diversity of our users (whether from a library/publisher or intermediary perspective)?
- Which methodologies can we use to identify our users' needs?
- How can our sector embed sustainability and affirm our commitment to objectives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals?
- How will advances in technology such as AI affect our sector, and how may it already be impacting user expectations?
- How can we work effectively to meet changing user expectations for content, in areas such as audio, video and interactive content?
