KGL Consulting, the scholarly publishing consultancy arm of KnowledgeWorks Global Ltd. (KGL), has formally announced the opening the 2024 edition of its Editorial Compensation Benchmark Study, designed to provide a basis of comparison for remuneration across journal editorial office positions. The 2024 report will be offered at no cost, but only to participating organizations.
The study is open to peer-reviewed scholarly journals that primarily publish original research. The final report to be distributed in November will identify the current low, medium, and high ranges of compensation for editor-in-chief and associate editor positions (including related positions such as deputy editor, section editor, and statistical editor). KGL will provide breakouts according to broad journal categories (medical/basic science/social science), journal Impact Factor, submissions, acceptance rate, and other relevant covariates. The report will also address areas that may impact journal operations and budgets such as evolving editorial position responsibilities and policies related to research integrity.
Since 2011, KGL Consulting has gathered and reported editorial compensation data to scholarly journal publishers who sponsored data collection efforts for a fee. The 2024 report is provided gratis, conditioned only on recipients also contributing to the study by sharing their anonymized compensation data. KGL will ensure confidentiality via non-disclosure agreements.
Cara Rivera, Vice President, Consulting and Market Analysis at KGL commented, “Change is accelerating across the journal publishing industry—and nowhere has the effect been more profound than in the editorial offices of scholarly journals. Our industry-leading report helps stakeholders set fair and thoughtful compensation policies for key editorial positions that reflect this shifting landscape. By accessing these data-driven insights at no charge, participating organizations can expect to make the widest possible comparisons to remain competitive in their respective fields.”
KGL is enrolling new participants in its 2024 Editorial Compensation Benchmark Study through July 26, 2024. Interested contributors are encouraged to submit a survey participation inquiry at www.kwglobal.com/compensation-study.
