The new Royal Society Open Access Equity scheme that will help to eliminate the cost barrier to open access publication for researchers in eligible low and middle-income countries and territories.
The fully open access journals, Open Biology and Royal Society Open Science, already offer automatic APC waivers for researchers from low and middle-income countries and from 1 August 2023 this waiver was extended to all journals. This will support tens of thousands of researchers in over 100 countries and territories by providing fee-free open access publication in all Royal Society journals.
Under the new scheme, no application is required, with eligibility recognised automatically once a paper is accepted. Researchers from countries not listed are able to apply for discretionary waivers in the open access journals and are still able to access some of the content for free.
