This webinar consists of three presentations:
Preprints: where are we now? by Jessica Polka
What are preprints, and why are they growing so rapidly in many disciplines? Focusing on the life sciences, I'll provide an overview of the kinetics of their adoption as well as key policy developments by funders, universities, journals, and infrastructure providers. Drawing on a recent survey of preprint server practices (https://zenodo.org/record/3626770), I'll describe of the current landscape of preprint servers and discuss considerations in selecting among them.
An academic’s experience of preprints by Stephen Royle
Preprints are changing the way we do science. They have positively disrupted scientific publishing and shaken up other many aspects of the research enterprise such as research evaluation during hiring and promotion. Stephen will talk about his experiences with bioRxiv, the main preprint server in biology. His research group deposited their first preprint on bioRxiv in Feb 2014 and they now preprint all of their work prior to journal submission.

The rapid adoption of preprints across disciplines has shifted the landscape of scholarly publishing. Preprints are part of a larger transition to include born digital works emerging from the scholarly workflow, challenging assumptions, altering reference points and raising questions about processes.

Judy Luther created Informed Strategies LLC and works with all stakeholders in scholarly information on the evolution of digital products and services. With both an MLS and MBA, Judy has worked in universities and for publishers and vendors. She offers expertise in market analyses, streamlined workflows, and strategic initiatives. A Past President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), and a chef in the Scholarly Kitchen, she serves on the editorial boards of The Charleston Advisor, Against the Grain and Learned Publishing (ALPSP).

Jessica Polka serves as Executive Director of ASAPbio, a researcher-driven nonprofit organization working to promote innovation and transparency in life sciences publishing in areas such as preprinting and open peer review. Prior to this, she performed postdoctoral research in the department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School following a PhD in Biochemistry & Cell Biology from UCSF. Jessica is also a Plan S Ambassador, an affiliate of the Knowledge Futures Group, and a steering committee member of Rescuing Biomedical Research.

Stephen Royle is a Professor at Warwick Medical School, UK where he heads a cell biology laboratory. He is an Affiliate of bioRxiv and an Ambassador for ASAPbio. He is also on the Board of Directors of Company of Biologists, a not-for-profit publisher that publishes several journals and supports a web resource, preLights, that highlights interesting preprints.
Learning outcomes
- Understand recent developments in preprint server adoption and practices as well as funder policies.
- Appreciate the current situation in scientific publishing from the perspective of an active research scientist.
- Gain insight into the potential role of preprints in the larger ecosystem
