About the Event
Library users are increasingly authenticating to online resources from off campus. Access control via campus IP recognition remains but publishers and service providers are increasingly investing in federated single sign on technologies such as SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language). Can libraries trust a platform that asks users to sign in with their personal institutional credentials? This webinar will explain how federated authentication works, will discuss the benefits for libraries and service providers and address the apparent conflict between offering personalisation whilst still preserving user privacy.

Heather Flanagan, Principal at Spherical Cow Consulting and coordinator with SeamlessAccess, comes from a position that the Internet is led by people, powered by words, and inspired by technology. She has been involved in leadership roles with some of the most technical, volunteer-driven organizations on the Internet, including IDPro as Principal Editor, the IETF, the IAB, and the IRTF as RFC Series Editor, ICANN as Technical Writer, and REFEDS as Coordinator, just to name a few. If there is work going on to develop new Internet standards, or discussions around the future of digital identity, she is interested in engaging in that work. You can learn more about her at <https://www.linkedin.com/in/hlflanagan/>

He is a 2022 candidate for a masters degree in organizational psychology with concentration in change leadership at Columbia University. He lives in the United States with his family.
Jos Westerbeke Erasmus University Library |
Jos Westerbeke chairs LIBER’s FIM4L Working Group. He is an expert on authentication, federated Single Sign-On, identity and access management. He has a technical IT background and works as an IT demand and information manager at the Erasmus University Library.
He is also involved in Research Data Management projects. He has acquired in-depth knowledge of e-resource access for libraries. Oversees and manages resource access and tools for all digital content providers of the Erasmus University Library. EZproxy is one of the tools used. Jos is currently working on improving access to library e-resources.
One of the problems libraries face when they have to set up a Single Sign-On connection for e-resources, is that they need a common standard or recommendation. Both libraries and publishers can refer to that for the best configuration. With this in mind, Jos co-founded FIM4L.

Feedback
Feedback from previous webinars
The UKSG webinars are great for me - they offer a wide range of topics and are very well prepared. I never experienced any technical difficulties. Due to the austerity measures brought by the recent worldwide events the training budget in my institution was frozen, so the fact that UKSG webinars are free is really a boon too!
The UKSG webinar was fantastic - well-organized, timely, accessible, and with an array of presenters that had insight into the topic.
Great to squeeze in so much useful knowledge and information without having to go out to a conference. I could enjoy taking it in with a sandwich at my desk! I felt very empowered afterwards.
