ISNI International Agency launches new guidance to help authors and creators protect their digital identity

23 February 2026

The ISNI International Agency has published a new industry resource designed specifically for authors and creative contributors working in the global book publishing sector: The Benefits of ISNI for Authors & Book Industry Contributors.

As publishing becomes increasingly digital and globally interconnected, accurate name identification plays a critical role in how creators are discovered, credited and paid. From retailer author pages and library catalogues to rights systems and royalty platforms, the correct presentation of a creator’s name in metadata can directly affect visibility, attribution and income.

The new guidance explains why obtaining an ISNI (International Standard Name Identifier) is a practical and strategic step for authors, writers, illustrators, translators, editors and researchers seeking to strengthen their professional identity and ensure their works are correctly attributed worldwide.

Addressing a Growing Industry Challenge

In a marketplace where thousands of creators share similar or identical names, misattribution and conflated author pages remain common challenges. Pseudonyms, multilingual publications, legal name changes and cross-sector careers can further complicate discoverability and rights tracking.ISNI (ISO 27729) provides a persistent 16-digit identifier that uniquely distinguishes one creator from another. By resolving name ambiguity at its source, ISNI helps ensure books, editions and translations are correctly grouped, contributor records remain consistent across systems, and intellectual property is accurately attributed across platforms.

The resource outlines how ISNI supports:

  • Stronger discoverability through accurate and consistent retailer author pages
  • Clear differentiation between creators with similar names
  • More reliable contributor identification across contracts and royalty systems
  • Management of pseudonyms and multiple public identities
  • Greater transparency around authorship by distinguishing human, fictional and AI-generated entities through persistent identifiers

Developed with Industry Input

The publication was developed with input from the ISNI Book Publishing Consultation Group, a global collective of more than 60 publishing professionals representing leading publishers, trade bodies, libraries, booksellers and metadata specialists. Their cross-sector expertise ensures the guidance reflects real-world publishing workflows and emerging industry priorities.

This new resource follows the previous release of The Benefits of ISNI for Publishers and forms part of a growing series of sector-specific guidance. Future publications will address the role of ISNI for booksellers and retailers, and for literary agents.

Tim Devenport, Executive Director of the ISNI International Agency, commented:

“For authors and contributors, professional identity is fundamental. When names are confused or metadata is inconsistent, discoverability and attribution suffer. This new resource demonstrates how securing an ISNI gives creators greater clarity and confidence in how their work is represented across the global publishing ecosystem.”

The document is available as a fully accessible HTML publication on the ISNI website, with a downloadable PDF edition available in English.
