Unlocking the Power of Community: Reflections on the UKSG Forum 2025

When budgets are constrained, community becomes the essential resource.

Yesterday I spent the day in Brighton for the UKSG Forum, one of my favourite events in the scholarly communications calendar. The Forum brings together librarians, publishers, vendors and information professionals for a day of lightning talks, networking and exhibition – and because it’s free to anyone working within a UKSG member organisation, it attracts voices we don’t always hear at larger conferences.

I felt this year’s programme, expertly assembled by Magaly Taylor and Tim Leonard and chaired by Charlie Rapple, had an unofficial theme: necessity is the mother of invention. Speaker after speaker described working with shrinking budgets, reduced teams, and constrained physical spaces. Yet what struck me most was not the challenges themselves, but the consistent solution that emerged: community.
