New report on tech needs of smaller publishers from Scholastica and Maverick

5 November 2025

Scholastica and Maverick Publishing Specialists have announced the release of a new report on the “Technology Needs of Small and Medium Journal Publishers.” The report details the results of a 2025 global survey of individuals working with independent scholarly publishing organizations with fewer than 1,000 employees, about their current journal technology stacks and future priorities.

The survey findings span:

  • Platform and workflow management insights: including the technology categories small-to-mid-sized publishers are currently using and their priorities for peer review and publishing process optimization.
  • Research integrity and the rise of AI: including the research integrity areas participants were most concerned about, research integrity automation priorities, and AI tool usage/sentiments.
  • Vendor collaboration and support: including how publishers would like to engage with technology providers to learn about and participate in software development plans.

Run between March and June 2025, the “Technology Needs of Small and Medium Journal Publishers” survey received 83 responses from individuals working at various types of publishers, including scholarly societies, university presses, and small commercial presses.

“We hope the survey helps small-to-mid-sized publishers have relevant reference points for how their peers are managing new publishing demands. At Scholastica, we believe technology can be the ultimate equalizer in terms of enabling organizations of any size to scale professional publishing operations. Learning more about the needs of smaller publishers will help us develop our software to better support them,” said Brian Cody, CEO and Co-Founder of Scholastica.

“These survey results show that small-to-medium publishers appreciate the role technology plays in their future sustainability and independence. The survey provides a roadmap for technology enhancements and integrations that can help publishers be competitive and grow in a fast-moving environment,” said Rebecca Rinehart, Maverick Senior Associate.
