Jisc’s New Guides to support compliance with the UKRI Open Access Policy

6 August 2025

Jisc has released a set of practical guides to help publishers, libraries, and research offices support researchers in meeting the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) open access policy. These four guides—two tailored for publishers and two for libraries—cover both journal articles and long-form publications such as monographs and book chapters.

For publishers, the guides explain how to provide compliant publishing routes, including gold (immediate open access on the publisher’s site) and green (self-archiving in a repository). They also detail licensing requirements like CC BY, outline what qualifies for UKRI block grant funding, and highlight common pitfalls to avoid—such as relying on now-ineligible transformative journals. A handy checklist is included to help publishers support UKRI-funded authors step by step.

For libraries and research offices, the guides offer clear advice on how to help researchers comply with the policy, whether they’re publishing articles or books. This includes guidance on selecting the right licence, understanding embargo periods, and including data access statements. The resources also provide practical tips for advocacy, raising policy awareness, and institutional support to ensure smooth compliance.
