Cabells launches beta of CompassAI – “high-powered journal matching tool” for authors

23 July 2025

Cabells – a US-based information services company – has launched CompassAI, a powerful and useful tool to help researchers and institutions optimize decision-making for where they publish.

With CompassAI, Cabells has taken the latest AI technology and overlaid it onto its highly regarded Journalytics and Predatory Reports databases. The result not only enables authors to find best-fit journals for their research, but crucially helps them to avoid predatory journals.

Access to CompassAI is open to all Cabells’ existing customers during its initial beta phase – after this phase is complete, CompassAI will only be available to customers with access to both Journalytics Academic and Predatory Reports databases, as well as Journalytics Medicine.

Commenting on the development, Cabells Chief Executive Officer Lacey Earle said: “This marks the first time we have used AI for one of our products, and the aim is to make it simpler than ever for our users to choose the right journal for them.

“By simply copying in the abstract of their article, they can benefit from the huge amount of data we have on over 33,000 journals to choose the right journal – and just as importantly, avoid the wrong journal”.

Cabells currently indexes over 13,000 journals in its Journalytics database, and includes over 19,000 in Predatory Reports
