After an incredibly rewarding time as co-editor of Insights, I will be stepping down this year—opening up an exciting opportunity for someone new to take on this role!

Being co-editor is both a privilege and a pleasure. You’ll work alongside the brilliant Steve Sharp, collaborate with a dynamic and creative editorial board, and be supported by an exceptionally efficient Publications Associate. Plus, you’ll have the chance to engage with innovative scholarship and stay at the forefront of developments in the scholarly communications community.

Of course, this role comes with responsibilities. As co-editor, you’ll share the desk review process with Steve, commission articles, assign peer reviewers, and help maintain the high editorial standards that make Insights such a respected journal.

Job Description – Co-Editor, Insights

Overview

The co-editors are responsible for maintaining the overall quality and integrity of Insights. They oversee the editorial review process to ensure it is thorough, fair, and timely while upholding the journal’s mission and scope. Co-editors select and commission papers that offer new, original, and significant contributions to the field.

Additionally, the co-editors collaborate closely with the editorial board, engage with the scholarly community, and contribute to the journal’s strategic direction.

Hours vary, depending on activity, and you will receive an honorarium.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Oversight

  • Uphold and refine the journal’s mission and scope.
  • Ensure all published content aligns with Insights’ editorial standards and objectives.
  • Decide on special issues and recruit guest editors as needed.

Peer Review & Publication Process

  • Conduct initial desk reviews of submissions.
  • Assign manuscripts to appropriate reviewers based on expertise.
  • Monitor review quality and ensure timely, constructive feedback for authors.
  • Make final publication decisions, particularly in cases of conflicting reviews.
  • Uphold ethical publishing standards and address any ethical concerns or misconduct involving authors or reviewers.

Author & Reviewer Relations

  • Ensure authors receive fair and transparent communication throughout the submission process.
  • Address errors, retractions, and ethical issues as they arise.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the review and publication process.

Editorial Contributions & Promotion

  • Write editorials and solicit manuscripts on key topics.
  • Attend three editorial board meetings annually.
  • Attend the annual UKSG conference (expenses paid) to solicit future articles from interesting speakers.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance the journal’s visibility and impact within the scholarly communications community.

Additional Expectations

The co-editors play a vital role in shaping Insights’ reputation and influence. This position requires strong editorial judgment, commitment to ethical publishing, and proactive engagement with the academic and publishing communities.
