arXiv is establishing itself as an independent nonprofit organisation, marking a significant shift after decades of partnership with Cornell University and support from the Simons Foundation.

The move represents the next stage in the platform’s 35-year history as a pioneer of open-access science, and is intended to support faster technological development, greater organisational flexibility, expanded partnerships, and long-term financial sustainability. The organisation says the transition will allow arXiv to modernise its infrastructure, expand subject coverage, and deepen engagement with international stakeholders, while maintaining its core mission as a free and open research-sharing platform.

Founded by and for researchers, arXiv hosts more than 2.7 million scholarly articles across over 150 categories spanning eight subject areas, including physics, mathematics, computer science and economics. The platform distributes around 1,000 new articles every five days and serves more than five million monthly users, with a total of 3.2 billion downloads to date.
