Course summary
The UKSG is able to call on the extensive experience of its members in sourcing expert speakers from the various sectors of the serials industry to present a practical overview of all aspects of serials management.
The emphasis is on developing a sound basic understanding of the details of serials handling in order to promote efficient and informed working practices. A wide range of day-to-day issues will be covered, with time devoted to recognising and resolving the problems that can arise at the boundaries between publishers, agents and libraries. The seminar will also consider all aspects of linking between journals.
Delegates will be able to air and exchange views in the afternoon breakout session.
Summary
Measuring the quality and value of online journals
This highly topical seminar brings together a range of eminent speakers to explore the ways in which the quality and value of online journals and their published output can be assessed, from the latest developments in long-standing citation-based assessment methods to newer technologies which have yet to be developed into reliable standards, including usage-based measures and linking metrics. Our experts will also consider the wider environment in which such measurements take place, in terms of the influence of quality measures on author and reader behaviour, the differing perceptions of value between disciplines, and the development of national quality initiatives such as the UK's Research Assessment Exercise.
Course summary
Many of us working directly with e-journals in libraries or as intermediaries or publishers would like to feel more confident in our understanding of the basic technology. Managing e-journals and making them available to end-users is quite different from dealing with print, but many of us have moved from one to the other, picking up expertise informally. Even then, we probably all have gaps in our knowledge and understanding, and the need to gain a proper balanced overview of the technical environment is crucial if we are to do our jobs effectively.
To meet the needs of the groups identified above, the UK Serials Group is continuing to offer its very successful practical one-day E-Journal Technical Update course run by Simon Inger Consulting. Simon Inger has a wealth of experience in technical and business matters concerning electronic journals.

How libraries, publishers and other stakeholders are responding to hard times
Summary
For the last year or more the world has been reeling from the impact of the global financial crisis quickly followed by a good old-fashioned recession. Although there are signs that in some countries the formal recession is coming to an end, at least for now, the effects of this shock to the world economy have already been felt in the scholarly communications world, and are likely to continue, in many countries, for the next few years.
Unfortunately, it has proved necessary to cancel this course. It is hoped to provide the course on a new date later in the year.
