SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar -  Digital Scholarship and the Future of the Book
DESCRIPTION:Scholarly authors are increasingly using digital tools. They want to produce enhanced ebooks and interactive scholarly works\, but these tend not to fit into existing publisher and librarian workflows. Fulcrum is a platform developed at the University of Michigan that supports authors who want to push the boundaries of the book. The University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) includes an increasing number of enhanced titles and takes full advantage of the rich features on the Fulcrum platform. Thanks to the support of purchasing libraries\, UMP EBC is able to sustain the publication of new forms of scholarship\, including open access titles\, and sustain the open-source\, community-based scholarly infrastructure. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Preprints are Changing the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:This webinar consists of three presentations: \nPreprints: where are we now? by Jessica Polka \n\nWhat are preprints\, and why are they growing so rapidly in many disciplines? Focusing on the life sciences\, I’ll provide an overview of the kinetics of their adoption as well as key policy developments by funders\, universities\, journals\, and infrastructure providers. Drawing on a recent survey of preprint server practices (https://zenodo.org/record/3626770)\, I’ll describe of the current landscape of preprint servers and discuss considerations in selecting among them. \n\n  \n\nAn academic’s experience of preprints by Stephen Royle \n\nPreprints are changing the way we do science. They have positively disrupted scientific publishing and shaken up other many aspects of the research enterprise such as research evaluation during hiring and promotion. Andrew was Chair of UKSG between 2018 and 2022\, and has been Vice-Chair of SCONUL since December 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10.30 \n\n\n\n\n\nThe price of doing the same old thing is far higher than the price of change \n\n\n\nTransformative Agreements are shaking up the traditional journal businesses. The subscription model\, though it has proved persistent and resistant\, struggles to be relevant in a digital world and is under pressure from advances in OA publishing. On the plus side: subscriptions provide a stable business framework; budgetary predictability for academic libraries; a means of spreading scholarly communication costs globally across academic institutions. Journal publishers have come to rely on upfront payments for publishing services. Under these conditions\, our research landscape has thrived. \n\n\n\nHowever change is needed. Exploding levels of research is just one of the factors that has put the subscription model under pressure; library budgets cannot keep pace with academic taskmasters cracking the whip to ‘Publish or Perish’.  Transformative Agreements provide an umbrella under which several forms of business-model metamorphosis are occurring. A proof of concept decolonising the curriculum project \n\n\n\nA group of three are currently undertaking a proof of concept project by reviewing the data captured for the CLA Licence of our key digitised readings in 2018/19. The data will be reviewed\, and authors tagged for gender\, ethnicity/nationality and geographically where titles were published as well as the publishers. The findings will be sent to relevant departments to take into consideration when reviewing their curriculum and to contextualise the debate about existing attainment gap/decolonising the curriculum. Her areas of interest are digital learning\, digital/information literacy and widening participation; where these are employed in her current post as Assistant Director of Library Services (E-Services\, Systems and Collections) at Birkbeck\, University of London. She has been involved with the Association for Learning Technology since 2013 and became a Trustee in 2017. She is actively involved in TEL developments in her institution\, working with academics and the Bloomsbury Learning Exchange consortium. As a result more universities and non-profits are building platforms for the publication\, preservation\, and dissemination of research works from articles to monographs and beyond. In 2018\, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded a project with the MIT Press and the MIT Knowledge Futures Group to conduct a landscape scan of open source platforms. John Maxwell of Simon Fraser University undertook this survey which resulted in an in-depth examination of several dozen open source platforms. Now that most books are accessible online\, the building once dedicated to silence and study is increasingly turning into a lively public gathering place—when it’s not disappearing altogether.” \n\n\n\nSince before the turn of the millennium\, I have been a “get rid of print” evangelist – libraries and library vendors should just work together on finding the best management and discovery options and users would happily follow……… or not\, as it turns out. Library users are not that easy to sway\, and it seems that despite a marked global decline in circulation\, the joy of handling a physical book will be here for a good while still.  This poses certain problems for many libraries\, as the public perception\, and especially the perception of funders\, has been swayed by constant messages like the one above. Now physical space is being repurposed for events\, exhibitions and other cultural activities. In some countries it is also increasingly difficult to secure funding for “behind the scenes” work like material handling. \n\n\n\nBut with patrons still wanting a good selection of fresh new books\, many libraries find themselves between a rock and a hard place. Facing this\, the two biggest libraries in Denmark\, Aarhus and Copenhagen\, in collaboration with Lyngsoe systems developed a modern logistic management system much like the warehouse management system which controls the flow of goods in a supermarket: Items must be displayed attractively\, and alerts sent to the system if replenishments are needed\, goods that doesn’t move well needs to be weeded out and each branch have a profile mirroring the needs of the individual communities. All the way through all items are documented and checked. Every item can be traced at any given time. DESCRIPTION:CORE hosts the world’s largest collection of open access full texts\, offering seamless\, unrestricted access to research for citizens\, researchers\, libraries\, software developers\, funders and others. CORE’s aggregated content comes from thousands of institutional and subject repositories as well as journals and covers all research disciplines. In January 2019\, CORE has hit the mark of 10 million monthly active users (10.41 million users). In September 2019\, core.ac.uk has made it to the top 5k websites globally by user engagement as measured by the independent Alexa Rank\, making it clearly one of the world’s most widely used Open Access services. \nIn this talk\, Petr and Nancy will explain the role of CORE in the open science ecosystem. They will introduce the solutions CORE offers for improving the delivery of research literature\, including tools for discovering freely available copies of papers that might be behind publishers’ paywalls as well as a recommender system for open access literature. The use of CORE data to monitor compliance with open access policies has also recently received attention. DESCRIPTION:Course summary\nChairs: Diana Massam\, Jisc and Fiona Ainsworth\, Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew \n\nThis one-day seminar aims to present a practical introductory overview of all aspects of e-resources management\, encompassing e-journals\, e-books and bibliographic and full-text databases. \n\nThe emphasis is on developing a sound basic understanding of the details of e-resources handling in order to promote efficient and informed working practices.  A wide range of day-to-day issues will be covered\, with time devoted to recognising and resolving the problems that can arise at the boundaries between publishers\, intermediaries and libraries\, and addressing business models such as open access.  In addition\, the seminar will provide a forum for a group discussion on the current issues and opportunities offered by e-books. \n\nDelegates will be able to air and exchange views in the discussion session after each presentation. \n\n\nWhy you should attend \n\nDesigned particularly for staff who are new to working with e-resources\, whether from a publisher\, an intermediary or a library\, this seminar may also be of interest to those looking to consolidate and update their e-resources knowledge. \n\n“I thought that the course was very comprehensive\, and was a great introduction.
