SUMMARY:Free UKSG webinar - Better together: building services for public good on top of content from the global network of open repositories
DESCRIPTION:CORE hosts the world’s largest collection of open access full texts\, offering seamless\, unrestricted access to research for citizens\, researchers\, libraries\, software developers\, funders and others. CORE’s aggregated content comes from thousands of institutional and subject repositories as well as journals and covers all research disciplines. In January 2019\, CORE has hit the mark of 10 million monthly active users (10.41 million users). In September 2019\, core.ac.uk has made it to the top 5k websites globally by user engagement as measured by the independent Alexa Rank\, making it clearly one of the world’s most widely used Open Access services. \nIn this talk\, Petr and Nancy will explain the role of CORE in the open science ecosystem. They will introduce the solutions CORE offers for improving the delivery of research literature\, including tools for discovering freely available copies of papers that might be behind publishers’ paywalls as well as a recommender system for open access literature. The use of CORE data to monitor compliance with open access policies has also recently received attention. She obtained her Ph.D. from ETH Zurich\, Switzerland\, studying mating-system evolution in a hermaphroditic freshwater snail. Her doctoral thesis was honoured with the Silver Medal of ETH Zurich for being outstanding. After a maternity leave\, Anja was awarded a Tailwind Grant to work as a postdoctoral researcher at EAWAG\, Department of Aquatic Ecology\, Switzerland. Since early 2019 she is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Zoology\, University of Oxford\, funded by an Early Postdoc Mobility Fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation. Her current research focuses on developing a more accurate method to predict short-term evolutionary change in natural populations\, using Trinidadian guppies (small tropical freshwater fish) as a study system. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlan Warde \n\n\n\nUniversity of Manchster \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nAlan Warde is Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester. His expertise is in cultural sociology\, the sociology of consumption and the sociology of food and eating. He has published widely\, acted as principal investigator of many research projects\, and has had positions of director of research at institute and faculty levels. He has previously served on the Executive Committee and as a trustee of the British Sociological Association with responsibility for publications. He currently has such a role with the European Sociological Association. He has just stepped down from the being Co-Editor in Chief of the journal Sociology. He has had a long career in research and writing and is in a good position to reflect on new pressures on social science researchers and changes in ways of reporting and publicising scholarly research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBryonny Goodwin-Hawkins \n\n\n\nAberystwyth University \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nDr Bryonny Goodwin-Hawkins is a social anthropologist specialising in rural and regional development in the UK and Central Europe. She joined the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences\, Aberystwyth University\, after previous appointments at the University of Melbourne. Her current research is part of IMAJINE and ROBUST – two major consortium projects funded by the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme\, and working across sixteen and eleven countries respectively. Bryonny is an affiliate of the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research\, Data and Methods (WISERD)\, and was recently recognised as one of the Welsh Crucible’s thirty emerging research leaders in Wales. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSergio Menchero-Fernandez \n\n\n\nThe Francis Crick Institute \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nI am a postdoctoral researcher in James Turner’ laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute (London\, UK). My scientific interests include developmental biology and cell fate choices\, specially from a transcriptional regulation perspective. My research training started at the Pierre et Marie Curie University (Paris\, France) thanks to the Erasmus program\, where I could join Muriel Umbhauer’ group for a few months. I obtained my Degree in Biology from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) in 2012. As an undergrad student I joined Miguel Manzanares’ laboratory at CNIC (Madrid\, Spain) to study the regulation of the trophectoderm lineage in the mouse preimplantation embryo. I stayed in the same lab to perform a PhD thanks to a “FPI-Severo Ochoa” fellowship\, and I focused on the transition of the totipotent embryo towards the activation of the first lineages. During my PhD\, I had the opportunity to carry out a short stay in Kat Hadjantonakis’ lab at the Sloan Kettering Institute (New York\, USA) learning live imaging. Understanding the library’s use of this data is also vital for publishers.   Advances in standardisation led by the COUNTER initiative have made statistics more accessible and reliable as a basis for decision making. \n\n\n\nIncreasingly\, libraries are being asked to make extremely difficult decisions about the priorities for their spending within a strategic context.  Although this presents huge challenges\, it can also be an impetus to change the ways in which services are provided. become a feature of most sales agreements.  Information professionals consequently need to become familiar with the terms and conditions of licences\, their meaning and their implications \n\n\n\nA This is followed by in-depth presentations on three key areas: \n\n\n\n\nDiscovery Services looks at the range of different search services\, including Resource Discovery Systems\, library catalogues\, search engines\, A&I databases\, and scholarly sharing sites such as ResearchGate.\n\n\n\nNavigation and Linking covers technologies and standards that link users from their search results to full-text content\, including persistent identifiers and DOIs\, link resolvers\, and OpenURLs.\n\n\n\nAuthentication outlines the services that enable users to login to online resources such as IP access\, referring URLs and Shibboleth\, as well as discussing how to support a more seamless access experience for users.\n\n\n\n\nEach presentation will be followed by a breakout session where delegates will work in small groups to discuss real-world troubleshooting scenarios\, relating the concepts covered in the presentations to their day-to-day work\, and learning from sharing practical experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be valuable to anyone responsible for supporting discovery and delivery services for e-resources\, or who is seeking a basic introduction to some of the technology services that support scholarly communications. The focus is on applications in libraries\, and throughout the day the speakers will address challenges faced by different types of libraries\, including HE\, FE and corporate. \n\n\n\nThe seminar will discuss a range of technologies supporting discovery and delivery\, but it will not compare specific library systems and solutions. It will impart a practical understanding of the technological challenges and approaches to addressing them\, but will not provide detailed technical solutions to specific problems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrevious knowledge required \n\n\n\n\n\nSome familiarity with the different types of online scholarly content may be helpful\, for example ejournals\, ebooks and online databases. If you are new to this area\, it is may be worth first attending the UKSG Introduction to E-Resources (5th June 2019) which gives an overview of different types of resources and how they are published and provided online. \n\n\n\nOtherwise no previous knowledge is required. In this presentation\, I argue for a new approach to enable libraries to take back control of their systems and their data. Open source software is not only more secure than proprietary software but allows users more control and customisation over how the software works. By working collaboratively\, libraries could establish community-driven multi-tenant library systems installations using open source software to give them more control over their system security\, to protect their users’ lending data\, and to divest themselves of third-party private library systems companies. This study investigates the current state of cyber security and resilience in Nigerian libraries\, identifying strengths\, weaknesses\, and areas for improvement. Survey research method of the quantitative type was used. Data collected online from 80 Heads of libraries and 26 Systems librarians in ten states in Nigeria will be analysed and presented in tables and percentages. The findings will inform a proposed framework for improving cyber resilience in Nigerian libraries. The aim was to audit the accessibility information provided for their e-books/platforms and assess their content and practical usefulness for disabled students and those who support them. This webinar will present some of the key findings of the audit and explore both the implications and the opportunities for libraries.

David is an ambassador for the CORE service. \n\n\n\nChristopher Daley has worked in a variety of research\, teaching and support roles in higher education. Christopher currently works at Brunel University London as Research Development Officer within the Research Support and Development Office\, where he supports academics in the construction of grant applications. Scholarly communication in an anti-globalisation environment\n\n\n\nIn recent years the globalisation and open dissemination of research has been a hot topic in the knowledge community – exploring issues such as how we support research dissemination and consumption across borders through the lenses of increasing mobility\, technological innovation and diverse global open access\, open data and open science agendas.  In contrast the last 12 months have been characterised by a contraction in both political and economic terms.  What is the impact of government policy\, politics and the funding environment on the vitality of the scholarly communication ecosystem?The 2017 UKSG One-Day Conference brings together expert perspectives from the UK and beyond to explore how the world of scholarly communication as we know it is changing in response to the huge political upheaval of our time. \n\n\n\nProgramme \n\n\n\n09.30    Registration and coffee \n\n\n\n10.00    Welcome and introduction by the ChairKate Price\, University Librarian\, Queen Mary University of London10.15    State of the sector: current issues and themes in UK higher education Ant Bagshaw\, Deputy Director\, Wonkhe \n\n\n\nAbstract: What do changes in higher education policy mean for scholarly communications?  Ant Bagshaw from HE think tank Wonkhe will explore the changes afoot in UK HE and identify trends and themes impacting universities.  He will try to make sense of the complexity by exploring competition\, compliance culture and the prospect of further change in the future.10.45    What does Brexit mean for the UK universities?John Ferguson\, Director of Global Forecasting\, The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) \n\n\n\nAbstract: Brexit will dominate the outlook for the UK economy in the coming years.  Negotiations are currently ongoing\, but what type of Brexit will we have?  Are we headed for a ‘hard’ Brexit or a transitional agreement?  How will this impact the UK economy over the next five years and what are the risks to this forecast?  Brexit also poses challenges for the UK university sector\, especially related to funding uncertainty and expectations over student enrolments.  However\, there will also be opportunities.  How these are exploited will be the determining factor of Brexit’s impact on UK higher education institutions.11.15    Coffee11.45    ‘The empires of the future are the empires of the mind’: defining the role of libraries in the Open Science landscape  Paul Ayris\, Pro-Vice-Provost (UCL Library Services)\, University College London \n\n\n\nAbstract: This paper looks at the emerging issues around Open Science and identifies what the role for libraries can be.  It does this by looking at four areas: Open Access\, Research Data Management\, the Library as publisher and Citizen Science.  The paper concludes by painting a picture for the Library full of opportunity\, but one where current systems and practices need to change.12.15    Putting developing country research production and dissemination into the global context Anne Powell\, Programme Manager\, Information Access and Publisher Liaison\, INASPSioux Cumming\, Programme Manager\, Journals Online\, INASP \n\n\n\nAbstract: Many of the world’s most pressing problems are faced by people in the Global South but the international research and publishing landscape is dominated by the Global North. For 25 years INASP has been working with partners in both North and South to redress this imbalance.
