SUMMARY:UKSG November Conference - Open Scholarship 2021: the good\, the bad and the ugly
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2021 UKSG November Conference – “Open Scholarship 2021: the good\, the bad and the ugly”. This year’s event will take place online over two consecutive half days. Wednesday 17th November: 9.30am GMT to approx. 12pm and Thursday 18th November: 1.30pm GMT to 5pm. \n\n\n\nSummary\n\n\n\nThe shift away from paywalls and towards open access continues to fundamentally change every area of our sector with new roles\, new business models and new power centres. Or is ‘the power’ in scholarship still centred in the same overall hands?  Can everyone be a winner in this new world\, or do some groups face continued – worse – challenges in the drive to make scholarship open? \n\n\n\nThis event brings together voices from across our sector to take a holistic view of open scholarship\, showing the flipsides and squeezed middles. Almost ten years on from the Finch Report\, we continue to be in a time of transition. We’ve travelled far\, but the road is no less bumpy – and what happens to those who fall behind? \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThe conference welcomes members and non-members of UKSG alike – Please note that advance registration is required.  \n\n\n\nRegistration is available here\, and will be valid for both sessions on the 17th and 18th November.  \n\n\n\nFees (both days): \n\n\n\n\nMember – £ 45.00 + £ 9.00 VAT\n\n\n\nNon-Member – £ 55.00 + £ 11.00 VAT\n\n\n\n\n(A list of members can be found here) \n\n\n\nIf you are unable to attend –   We will send you a link to a recording after the event.  \n\n\n\nPre event checks\n\n\n\nTo test your system ahead of time visit https://support.goto.com/webinar/system-check-attendee \n\n\n\nFollow the webinar on Twitter @UKSG and the hashtag #UKSGNov \n\n\n\nThank you to our sponsors:\n\n\n\nwww.amdigital.co.ukwww.harrassowitz.deSpringer Naturewww.wiley.com\n\n\n\nAccessibility\n\n\n\nUKSG wants to provide the best possible experience for all our delegates\, making presentations as accessible and inclusive as possible. \n\n\n\nOur intention where possible is to strongly encourage our speakers to provide auto generated closed captioning for both live and recorded events as well as to make sure their slides as easy as possible for all people to read. In addition\, we can provide auto generated transcripts post event for each of the recorded sessions. \n\n\n\nIf you have particular accessibility needs or questions about this event\, we welcome you to contact events@uksg.org about this seminar/webinar\, we welcome you to contact events@uksg.org

SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Making Open Access Book Funding Work Fairly: Central European University Press and Opening the Future
DESCRIPTION:Open access monograph publishing needs to be sustainable not just for publishers\, but also for libraries. CEU Press’ collective library funding programme ‘Opening the Future’ was designed to be low-cost and simple\, slotting into acquisitions budgets and existing library purchasing workflows. Several months into launch\, we assess how this has fared and discuss how we can scale without increasing the administrative and decision-making burden already on collections and scholarly communications teams\, who are already picking through a tangle of transformative agreements\, pay-to-publish deals\, author affiliations\, and legacy subscriptions. The session will be set in context of the recent UKRI monograph policy announcement. \n  \n\nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar here. \n\nTranscript \n\nThe recording\, including transcript\, is available on the UKSG free webinars channel. \n\n(Please note that webinars have software generated transcripts therefore are not 100% accurate. For the recording with captions or if you would like a copy of the transcript please feel free to contact samira@uksg.org). \n\nSlides \n\nOur speakers have kindly agreed to make their slides available. You may download them from here. Please use the correct attribution if you wish to refer to them. \n\nQ&A \n\nPlease find here the Q&A document that our speakers have kindly put together. bear with us\, this document will be uploaded as soon as it becomes available. \n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Federated authentication for library resources: can it be trusted?
DESCRIPTION:Library users are increasingly authenticating to online resources from off campus. Access control via campus IP recognition remains but publishers and service providers are increasingly investing in federated single sign on technologies such as SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language). Can libraries trust a platform that asks users to sign in with their personal institutional credentials? This webinar will explain how federated authentication works\, will discuss the benefits for libraries and service providers and address the apparent conflict between offering personalisation whilst still preserving user privacy. \n  \nRegister for this recording \nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \nTranscript \nThe recording including transcript will be available shortly on the UKSG free webinars channel. \n(Please note that webinars have software generated transcripts therefore are not 100% accurate. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Back to the Future: Lessons learned from the Jisc OA Textbook project
DESCRIPTION:With eTextbooks high on library and publisher agendas and the controversy over costs and access raging\, OA textbooks could be a solution. What are the considerations for initiating\, and sustaining an open access textbook directly linked to teaching at one institution\, but open to all? The 2014-2018 Jisc Institution as eTextbook Publisher project funded OA textbook pilots and created a toolkit. Liverpool published 2 titles\, in a partnership with the Library and Liverpool University Press. In this webinar we will revisit the project and look forward\, considering resource and expertise requirements for a sustainable OA textbook model. \n  \n\nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nTranscript \n\nThe recording including transcript will be available shortly on the UKSG free webinars channel. \n\n(Please note that webinars have software generated transcripts therefore are not 100% accurate. Including the impact on our systems and feedback from other stakeholders involved. Such policies place significant new responsibilities on individual researchers\, including how and where they preserve their data. This session will therefore be of particular interest to those involved in supporting authors to follow new data sharing requirements. It will also give a fascinating insight into how different parts of the scholarly communications community are working together to drive the data sharing agenda \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMatt Cannon \n\n\n\nAssociate Director Biochemical Society/Portland Press Ltd \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nGaynor is committed to develolping sustainable and fair routes enabling authors the choice of not for profit journals in which to publish their research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11.38 \n\n\n\n\n\nLightning Talk Group A – Engaging the public in academic research – what has open access done for the wider community? \n\n\n\nWider access to academic research is recognised as a benefit of open access but what does that mean for the public? With an increasingly educated population\, more people want access to reliable information. In 2019\, the library research support teams at the University of the West of England and University of Bristol\, delivered a public engagement event at a local public library. Cumbria County Council paid a UK structural design firm £1.15 million to conduct repairs\, and in 2019 the paper of its renovation was published. Unfortunately\, academics who wish to write about real-world impact will find systemic barriers to themselves publishing in a journal that prominently features practitioners\, leading them to often do so ‘off-the-books’. What is the future post-UKRI ‘Pathways to Impact’? Publishing revenues have been under pressure for years. In partner-published societies\, the inclusion of journals in big deals means shrinking revenue and a loss of transparency\, while at the same time independent society publishers have struggled to sell single subscriptions in a market where the majority of funds are directed at big deals. Society approaches to OA\, however\, are driven by the needs and preferences of their members and therefore many societies are embracing OA and aiming to transition away from subscription revenues. In practice this has meant independent society publishers implementing new models\, working with consortia as well as agents and introducing entirely new workflows and metadata to manage deals\, in a very short space of time. By contrast partner-published societies have been swept along by their partners\, usually with a further loss of visibility and control over their own titles. \n\n\n\n Then 2020 arrived\, bringing with it a global pandemic\, and the other two legs of the society stool became as unstable as publishing revenues. Societies were unable to deliver their usual events\, and thus lost the new members who would usually sign up for those events. In the UK the government pressed ahead with a hard Brexit but delayed decisions until the last possible moment\, leaving societies\, like everyone else\, to scramble for a response. The question must be asked: How might societies and institutions better work together to properly support the scholars who rely on both sides? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTasha Mellins-Cohen \n\n\n\nMellins-Cohen Consulting \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nTasha Mellins-Cohen\, Executive Director at COUNTER Metrics and Founder of Mellins-Cohen Consulting\, joined the scholarly publishing industry in 2001. This is\, however\, a subset of the titles becoming available thanks to increased funding\, in both the US and Europe. Many are of extremely high quality and from well-known as well as innovative new publishers. Because library vendors struggle with the business model\, there are obstacles for libraries in trying to acquire these titles. This session will explore the changing landscape of OA ebooks and describe successful strategies adopted by libraries to add them to collections\, support their publishing\, discovery\, and use. Many libraries are interested in supporting open access\, but they are challenged by both budgetary issues and workflow exceptions. This session will provide a manageable and pragmatic way forward for academic libraries of all sizes. The speakers will share how their institutions are supporting open access book publication while also adding valuable new resources for their campus communities — free of the familiar use restrictions that are so frustrating to librarians when working with ebooks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCharles Watkinson \n\n\n\nUniversity of Michigan Library \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nCharles Watkinson is Associate University Librarian for Publishing at the University of Michigan Library and Director of University of Michigan Press. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Knowledge justice on the internet: different ways of knowing and doing
DESCRIPTION:The infrastructure\, content\, and design of digital tools and spaces increasingly underpin our many modes of both offline and online communication. This is especially true during this time of forced immobility in response to the coronavirus pandemic. But as the internet has become suddenly more central to our lives\, this moment has also revealed the many ways in which internet access and use are unequal. In this talk\, we frame the issue of internet inequality in terms of ‘knowledge justice’ — aspiring to equal participation\, representation\, and visibility of different forms of knowledge online. We explore how our experiences of the internet are the products of certain exclusive knowledges. And we share some of the exciting ways in which we can build an internet that is more inclusive\, accessible\, diverse\, multi-directional\, and just– an internet that is truly for and by us all. \nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nTranscript \n\nThe recording including transcript is available on the UKSG webinar channel. \n\n(Please note that webinars have software generated transcripts therefore are not 100% accurate. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Digital Scholarship and the Future of the Book
DESCRIPTION:Scholarly authors are increasingly using digital tools. They want to produce enhanced ebooks and interactive scholarly works\, but these tend not to fit into existing publisher and librarian workflows. Fulcrum is a platform developed at the University of Michigan that supports authors who want to push the boundaries of the book. The University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) includes an increasing number of enhanced titles and takes full advantage of the rich features on the Fulcrum platform. Thanks to the support of purchasing libraries\, UMP EBC is able to sustain the publication of new forms of scholarship\, including open access titles\, and sustain the open-source\, community-based scholarly infrastructure. In this webinar attendees will learn about this new form of scholarship\, including how it is being sustained by the community via UMP EBC and Fulcrum\, and walk away with inspired to sustain this burgeoning community.   \nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nSlides \n\nOur speakers have kindly agreed to make their slides available. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Preprints are Changing the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:This webinar consists of three presentations: \nPreprints: where are we now? by Jessica Polka \n\nWhat are preprints\, and why are they growing so rapidly in many disciplines? Focusing on the life sciences\, I’ll provide an overview of the kinetics of their adoption as well as key policy developments by funders\, universities\, journals\, and infrastructure providers. Drawing on a recent survey of preprint server practices (https://zenodo.org/record/3626770)\, I’ll describe of the current landscape of preprint servers and discuss considerations in selecting among them. \n\n  \n\nAn academic’s experience of preprints by Stephen Royle \n\nPreprints are changing the way we do science. They have positively disrupted scientific publishing and shaken up other many aspects of the research enterprise such as research evaluation during hiring and promotion. Stephen will talk about his experiences with bioRxiv\, the main preprint server in biology. His research group deposited their first preprint on bioRxiv in Feb 2014 and they now preprint all of their work prior to journal submission. \n\n  \n\nPreprints – Finding their place in scholarly research by Judy Luther \n\nThe rapid adoption of preprints across disciplines has shifted the landscape of scholarly publishing.  Preprints are part of a larger transition to include born digital works emerging from the scholarly workflow\, challenging assumptions\, altering reference points and raising questions about processes. \n\n  \n\nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nSlides \n\nOur speakers have kindly agreed to make their slides available. The subscription model\, though it has proved persistent and resistant\, struggles to be relevant in a digital world and is under pressure from advances in OA publishing. On the plus side: subscriptions provide a stable business framework; budgetary predictability for academic libraries; a means of spreading scholarly communication costs globally across academic institutions. Journal publishers have come to rely on upfront payments for publishing services. Under these conditions\, our research landscape has thrived. \n\n\n\nHowever change is needed. Exploding levels of research is just one of the factors that has put the subscription model under pressure; library budgets cannot keep pace with academic taskmasters cracking the whip to ‘Publish or Perish’.  Transformative Agreements provide an umbrella under which several forms of business-model metamorphosis are occurring. This talk describes how at the Microbiology Society\, we calculated the price of change against the price of staying as we were; what guiding principles and vision drove our decisions\, and the way in which we approached and executed changes designed to transition to a business model fit for purpose in the 21st century. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGaynor Redvers-Mutton \n\n\n\nAssociate Director Biochemical Society/Portland Press Ltd \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nGaynor is committed to develolping sustainable and fair routes enabling authors the choice of not for profit journals in which to publish their research. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11.00 \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat it means to be transformative: a faster path to an open future \n\n\n\nPlan S and the drive towards a full and immediate open access future has put a sharp focus on the role research publishing and research publishers can play in speeding up the transition to full OA. He previously served as Associate University Librarian (Learning and Research Support) at the University of Salford where he was responsible for developing services in support of teaching\, learning and research and on development of the library’s collections. David’s current focus is on developing the academic library workforce to meet shifting priorities and new service directions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10.00 \n\n\n\n\n\nLiberate our library: social justice and the need for change \n\n\n\nThe Goldsmiths Library Liberate our Library campaign seeks to align itself with the call for social justice amongst students by identifying practices that marginalise and discriminate against those in the minority. It also calls for the de-centring of Whiteness in the curriculum as well as on the bookshelves. This presentation will highlight the work so far\, which includes: the liberate our degrees book suggestions and collection\, working alongside academic departments to decolonise the curriculum\, collaborating with teaching staff on inclusive reading lists using Talisplayer\, and delivering workshops covering subjects like – Resistance researching\, and Decolonizing research methods. \n\n\n\nResources \n\n\n\nRecorded Presentation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarilyn Clarke \n\n\n\nGoldsmiths\, University of London \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10.30 \n\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments & exhibition viewing \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11.00 \n\n\n\n\n\nBreakouts – Group A \n\n\n\nBreakout session descriptions \n\n\n\nRecorded Presentations available below  \n\n\n\nThe research technologist – A valuable allrounder in any academic team – Andy Tattersall\,  The University of Sheffield  \n\n\n\nResources \n\n\n\nRecorded Presentation: The research technologist – A valuable allrounder in any… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12.00 \n\n\n\n\n\nCommunity and university owned Open Infrastructure: Results from the MIT Landscape Scan \n\n\n\nWith increasing industry consolidation around researcher and publisher services\, there are growing concerns that commercial and proprietary players will “lock in” the entire research life cycle. As a result more universities and non-profits are building platforms for the publication\, preservation\, and dissemination of research works from articles to monographs and beyond. In 2018\, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded a project with the MIT Press and the MIT Knowledge Futures Group to conduct a landscape scan of open source platforms. John Maxwell of Simon Fraser University undertook this survey which resulted in an in-depth examination of several dozen open source platforms. Now that most books are accessible online\, the building once dedicated to silence and study is increasingly turning into a lively public gathering place—when it’s not disappearing altogether.” \n\n\n\nSince before the turn of the millennium\, I have been a “get rid of print” evangelist – libraries and library vendors should just work together on finding the best management and discovery options and users would happily follow……… or not\, as it turns out. Library users are not that easy to sway\, and it seems that despite a marked global decline in circulation\, the joy of handling a physical book will be here for a good while still.  This poses certain problems for many libraries\, as the public perception\, and especially the perception of funders\, has been swayed by constant messages like the one above. Now physical space is being repurposed for events\, exhibitions and other cultural activities. In some countries it is also increasingly difficult to secure funding for “behind the scenes” work like material handling. \n\n\n\nBut with patrons still wanting a good selection of fresh new books\, many libraries find themselves between a rock and a hard place. Facing this\, the two biggest libraries in Denmark\, Aarhus and Copenhagen\, in collaboration with Lyngsoe systems developed a modern logistic management system much like the warehouse management system which controls the flow of goods in a supermarket: Items must be displayed attractively\, and alerts sent to the system if replenishments are needed\, goods that doesn’t move well needs to be weeded out and each branch have a profile mirroring the needs of the individual communities. All the way through all items are documented and checked. Every item can be traced at any given time. The library knows exactly where a particular set of DVD’s are. \n\n\n\n\n\nHelle Lauridsen \n\n\n\nLyngsoe Systems \n\n\n\nHenrik Kjelgaard \n\n\n\nLyngsoe Systems \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n12.20 \n\n\n\n\n\nEvidence and emotion: establishing a workplace journal club to share knowledge\, experience and camaraderie \n\n\n\nContinuing professional development is hugely beneficial to individual and institutional learning\, but restricted budgets\, lack of time\, and busy workloads are common barriers to participation. But what are librarians good at? Finding research literature. And what do librarians need a lot of? Coffee. \n\n\n\nA journal club creates an opportunity to engage with scholarly work and share personal practices in an informal and democratic space. By bringing together the evidence and creating protected time to air reflections and concerns\, a journal club can contribute to a sense of shared understanding and solidarity. I will share practical guidance on establishing and managing your own journal club. \n\n\n\n\n\nHannah Hickman \n\n\n\nAston University \n\n\n\nSee Biography\nHannah has recently moved to a research support role\, having previously worked as a liaison librarian and in community engagement. As societies seek to transition to Open Access (OA) there is new opportunity to work together to achieve shared strategies. In 2019 new principles to inform the development of transformative agreements were jointly developed by representatives of library consortia and society publishers as part of the SPA OPS project. A model transformative agreement toolkit built on these principles was developed\, and then piloted by societies and consortia in a number of countries. This presentation will provide a first overview of those pilots and lessons learned. \n\n\n\nResources \n\n\n\nRecorded Presentation \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlicia Wise \n\n\n\nInformation Power \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nAlicia Wise is Executive Director of CLOCKSS\, a community of research libraries and academic publishers working together to ensure the long-term preservation of the scholarly record.
