SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar: Why we all need to #DefendResearch
DESCRIPTION:This is a fantastic opportunity to listen to expert speakers with no travelling required. This is a free webinar – Please note that advance registration is required. As scholarly communications professionals\, we know that censorship is a threat to both the researchers we serve and the important research they conduct. Many researchers and research projects have lost funding\, or been limited in their ability to pursue\, communicate\, and publish their work freely\, creating uncertainty about career security and advancement. \n\n\n\nAs individuals\, many of us are standing up for what we believe in; unfortunately\, this is less the case at the organizational level\, which is creating a disconnect whose impact will surely be felt in the future — between faculty\, students\, librarians and their institutions; and between journal editors\, publishing staff\, and their organizations. In this session you’ll hear from Lisa Schiff\, the initiator of the Declaration to #DefendResearch against U.S. Government Censorship\, and two of its organizational signatories — Louis Coiffait-Gunn of CILIP and Terri Teleen of Emerald Publishing. They’ll share their perspectives on why\, when\, and how organizations can fight back against censorship of research\, and discuss the challenges — and opportunities — this represents for our community. \n\n\n\nDisclaimer: As part of our mission to connect the knowledge community and encourage the exchange of ideas\, UKSG hosts discussions on a wide range of topics affecting scholarly communication. Academic and other research libraries maintain complex multi-format collections. Electronic resources represent a growing portion of collection budgets but cannot be considered in isolation from other types of physical and digital content. Library services platforms include integrated electronic resource management components\, supported by knowledge bases to enable portfolio-level administration as well as discovery services supporting article-level access. Marshall Breeding will guide attendees through the current realm of library management products\, focusing on their components and capabilities for electronic resource management. So far current systems have not incorporated significant use of AI\, but we can expect that to change in the near future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarshall Breeding \n\n\n\nLibrary Technology Guides \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nHe is the creator and editor of Library Technology Guides. But how do we create a virtual doorway that allows access for our community members yet blocks it for others? Many options exist: IP authentication and proxy servers\, single sign-on tools\, shared username and passwords\, referring URLs\, library card number identifiers\, Google CASA\, OpenID\, and more. This session will briefly review the most important authentication tools for libraries\, comparing benefits and drawbacks of the most common options. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter McCracken \n\n\n\nCornell University \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nPeter McCracken is Director of Acquisitions and E-Resources Licensing at Cornell University\, and is currently chair of the ALA Core Authentication and Authorization Committee. He worked as a reference librarian at East Carolina University and the University of Washington before co-founding Serials Solutions\, a company that helped libraries manage their electronic resources. In 2009 he co-founded ShipIndex.org\, a vessel research database\, which offers multiple forms of authentication options for institutional subscribers. He holds an MA in Library Science and an MS in Maritime History\, and spent five very enjoyable months living in York\, UK\, in 2018. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n15.50 \n\n\n\n\n\nAll about the UK federation & Single Sign On \n\n\n\nWe will review what the UK federation does to provide authenticated Single Sign On (SSO)access to library resources. Deconstruct the technical options libraries and publishers can use to participate such as Shibboleth and Open Athens as well as establishing some clarity on how Jisc supports those numerous technical alternatives. We will also look at some of the pitfalls\, pain points and lament the occasional lost opportunity in access management. As well as researchers\, librarians\, publishers\, information professionals\, and others play a critical role in connecting knowledge to the people and systems that can use it to create change. This role in enabling research impact is far more powerful than it is often recognised. \n\n\n\nThe SDG Publishers Compact Fellows have developed the Top Action Tips to help the scholarly communications community harness that potential. The Tips include many practical\, low-barrier actions for making your research\, or the research you support\, more visible\, more discoverable\, and more impactful – reaching researchers\, educators\, policymakers\, and practitioners who can turn it into real-world change. \n\n\n\nIn this session you’ll get a practical introduction to the Tips\, hear examples of how others are already putting them into practice\, and leave with a ready-to-use toolkit you can pick up straight away. If you have an interest in how to amplify the impact of research outcomes\, and a desire to help drive progress towards the SDGs then this session is for you! \n\n\n\nDisclaimer: As part of our mission to connect the knowledge community and encourage the exchange of ideas\, UKSG hosts discussions on a wide range of topics affecting scholarly communication. I felt very empowered afterwards. \nEmma Thompson\, Glasgow Caledonian University\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNB: UKSG reserves the right to alter or vary the programme due to events or circumstances beyond its reasonable control without being obliged to refund monies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nContact \n\n\n\nThis is a free webinar – Please note that advance registration is required. \n\n\n\nPlease take a look at our code of conduct \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCancellations \n\n\n\nIf you have already registered and are subsequently unable to attend\, please do not cancel your registration – only active registrations will receive the recording in a follow-up e-mail. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShare this Event\n\n\n\nPlease help us by letting your colleagues and friends know about our event.
