She has worked in various types of libraries and contributed to different metadata working groups and committees internationally\, including ABES-SC in France\, NISO in the US\, and UKSG in the UK. Currently\, Magaly is the Discovery and Usage Manager for Gale\, which is part of the Cengage Group. Academic and other research libraries maintain complex multi-format collections. Electronic resources represent a growing portion of collection budgets but cannot be considered in isolation from other types of physical and digital content. Library services platforms include integrated electronic resource management components\, supported by knowledge bases to enable portfolio-level administration as well as discovery services supporting article-level access. Marshall Breeding will guide attendees through the current realm of library management products\, focusing on their components and capabilities for electronic resource management. So far current systems have not incorporated significant use of AI\, but we can expect that to change in the near future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarshall Breeding  \n\n\n\nLibrary Technology Guides \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nHe is the creator and editor of Library Technology Guides. From 2002 through 2021 he was the editor and contributor for Smart Libraries Newsletter published by the American Library Association and has authored the annual Library Systems Report published in American Libraries since 2014 and in Library Journal from 2002-2013. He has authored fourteen issues of ALA’s Library Technology Reports and has written many other articles and book chapters. Breeding has edited or authored eight books. But how do we create a virtual doorway that allows access for our community members yet blocks it for others? Many options exist: IP authentication and proxy servers\, single sign-on tools\, shared username and passwords\, referring URLs\, library card number identifiers\, Google CASA\, OpenID\, and more. This session will briefly review the most important authentication tools for libraries\, comparing benefits and drawbacks of the most common options. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter McCracken \n\n\n\nCornell University \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nPeter McCracken is Director of Acquisitions and E-Resources Licensing at Cornell University\, and is currently chair of the ALA Core Authentication and Authorization Committee. He worked as a reference librarian at East Carolina University and the University of Washington before co-founding Serials Solutions\, a company that helped libraries manage their electronic resources. In 2009 he co-founded ShipIndex.org\, a vessel research database\, which offers multiple forms of authentication options for institutional subscribers. He holds an MA in Library Science and an MS in Maritime History\, and spent five very enjoyable months living in York\, UK\, in 2018. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n15.50 \n\n\n\n\n\nAll about the UK federation & Single Sign On  \n\n\n\nWe will review what the UK federation does to provide authenticated Single Sign On (SSO)access to library resources. Deconstruct the technical options libraries and publishers can use to participate such as Shibboleth and Open Athens as well as establishing some clarity on how Jisc supports those numerous technical alternatives. We will also look at some of the pitfalls\, pain points and lament the occasional lost opportunity in access management. Reducing staffing resources and the outsourcing of specialist cataloguing skills has meant that ensuring quality metadata for e-resources is often a secondary concern. At a really basic level I will be briefly discussing what makes a good quality catalogue record and how it can make a difference to a user’s discovery experience. I will also be highlighting a few things we have done to help take back control of what we display and how we display it\, even if some of the large collections of electronic materials might seem like quite an unwieldy beast \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCallum Procter  \n\n\n\nUniversity of Essex \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nCallum has 10 years experience of cataloguing and metadata in both special collections and heritage institutions and higher educational libraries. This seminar will explore how to advocate for the use and uptake of OERs and practical steps and tools for creating them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy should you attend?  \n\n\n\n\n\nDelegates will have a chance to hear from a variety of different perspectives\, which will include how open resources can support teaching and learning\, how resources are being developed and promoted\, and how others have approached the creation and management of OERs. Drawing on projects in microbiology and immunology\, it will showcase how OER can be adapted using H5P activities\, student–staff co-creation\, and generative AI. The session will discuss practical approaches to remixing and extending OER\, as well as challenges related to quality assurance\, accessibility\, sustainability\, and intellectual property. Attendees will gain transferable strategies for transforming open content into engaging learning experiences while maintaining academic and pedagogical oversight. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYing Liu  \n\n\n\nUniversity of Southampton  \n\n\n\nSee Biography\nYing Liu\, PhD\, FHEA\, is a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton and Deputy Assessment Lead for the MSc Allergy programme. Ying’s work focuses on digital education\, open educational resources (OER)\, student–staff co-creation\, and the use of educational technologies to support active learning. Ying has led multiple OER initiatives\, including the development and adaptation of open textbooks and interactive learning resources in microbiology\, and immunology. Ying is also active in the open education community and is currently pursuing a Global Master of Public Health at Imperial College London. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n14:00 \n\n\n\n\n\nSession 2:  From Policy to Platform: How Durham University Built its Open Educational Resources Framework \n\n\n\nOpen Educational Resources rarely arrive with institutional infrastructure already in place. This session shares how two colleagues at Durham University worked together to develop the institution’s first OER policy and build a web platform to showcase existing open resources. Starting with little more than a conviction that it mattered\, we reflect honestly on the process: making the case internally\, navigating approval routes\, designing something people would actually use\, and the ongoing work of generating interest across a large and busy university. For anyone thinking about how to get OER taken seriously at their own institution\, this is a warts-and-all account of what that looks like in practice. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoss Parker  \n\n\n\nUniversity of Durham  \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nRoss Parker is a Senior Digital Education Consultant at Durham University’s Centre for Academic Development\, aligned to the Faculty of Science\, with 12 years’ experience in digital education. A co-author of Durham’s first institutional OER policy\, Ross has championed open practice across the university\, including making the case for specialist open-source software for STEM subjects and contributing to the introduction of lecture capture. His areas of interest include digital accessibility and multimedia learning. Ross holds an MSc in Digital Education from the University of Edinburgh and is currently completing a Senior Leadership qualification at Durham Business School. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdel Gordon \n\n\n\nUniversity of Durham  \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nWith over 25 years in Digital Learning in Higher Education\, Adel brings pedagogical expertise to Durham University\, collaborating with academic staff to design\, develop\, and enhance teaching across online\, blended\, and face-to-face environments. Co-author of Durham’s OER policy\, Adel has hands-on experience creating Open Educational Resources in partnership with academics in Science disciplines. In 2025\, the Open Education Working Group in King’s Libraries & Collections put forward a successful proposal to partner with the King’s 100 to discover how students felt about open educational resources\, and to consider how we could promote\, create and showcase OER at King’s. Prior to King’s she worked in academic libraries specialising in business and law.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n15:40 \n\n\n\n\n\nSession 4: Partnering for OER creation: Practical approaches for working with faculty developing openly licensed textbooks. \n\n\n\nThe Open Educational Resources Unit at Oregon State University has been helping faculty publish free\, openly licensed textbooks (OER) since 2014. I took over the position of director in 2019 despite having no publishing background. Since then\, as a small unit of two\, we have steadily developed our workflows and policies to create open textbooks that have a reach far beyond our own institution. In this presentation\, I will explain our program\, how we fund projects\, and tools and resources that we use. This presentation will explore a successful workshop model advocating for OER adoption\, created by the Open Education Network in the US\, and adapted and shared for a UK/Irish audience by colleagues at Brunel University of London and University of Sheffield. The catalogue is designed to provide a shared\, multilingual discovery environment for openly licensed textbooks published across Europe\, improving their visibility\, accessibility and reuse. \n\n\n\nThe session will present the rationale behind the initiative\, and explore how open and interoperable metadata can connect resources from different institutions and publishing systems.
