SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Knowledge justice on the internet: different ways of knowing and doing
DESCRIPTION:The infrastructure\, content\, and design of digital tools and spaces increasingly underpin our many modes of both offline and online communication. This is especially true during this time of forced immobility in response to the coronavirus pandemic. But as the internet has become suddenly more central to our lives\, this moment has also revealed the many ways in which internet access and use are unequal. In this talk\, we frame the issue of internet inequality in terms of ‘knowledge justice’ — aspiring to equal participation\, representation\, and visibility of different forms of knowledge online. We explore how our experiences of the internet are the products of certain exclusive knowledges. And we share some of the exciting ways in which we can build an internet that is more inclusive\, accessible\, diverse\, multi-directional\, and just– an internet that is truly for and by us all. \nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nTranscript \n\nThe recording including transcript is available on the UKSG webinar channel. \n\n(Please note that webinars have software generated transcripts therefore are not 100% accurate. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Digital Scholarship and the Future of the Book
DESCRIPTION:Scholarly authors are increasingly using digital tools. They want to produce enhanced ebooks and interactive scholarly works\, but these tend not to fit into existing publisher and librarian workflows. Fulcrum is a platform developed at the University of Michigan that supports authors who want to push the boundaries of the book. The University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) includes an increasing number of enhanced titles and takes full advantage of the rich features on the Fulcrum platform. Thanks to the support of purchasing libraries\, UMP EBC is able to sustain the publication of new forms of scholarship\, including open access titles\, and sustain the open-source\, community-based scholarly infrastructure. In this webinar attendees will learn about this new form of scholarship\, including how it is being sustained by the community via UMP EBC and Fulcrum\, and walk away with inspired to sustain this burgeoning community.   \nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nSlides \n\nOur speakers have kindly agreed to make their slides available. SUMMARY:FREE UKSG webinar - Preprints are Changing the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:This webinar consists of three presentations: \nPreprints: where are we now? by Jessica Polka \n\nWhat are preprints\, and why are they growing so rapidly in many disciplines? Focusing on the life sciences\, I’ll provide an overview of the kinetics of their adoption as well as key policy developments by funders\, universities\, journals\, and infrastructure providers. Drawing on a recent survey of preprint server practices (https://zenodo.org/record/3626770)\, I’ll describe of the current landscape of preprint servers and discuss considerations in selecting among them. \n\n  \n\nAn academic’s experience of preprints by Stephen Royle \n\nPreprints are changing the way we do science. They have positively disrupted scientific publishing and shaken up other many aspects of the research enterprise such as research evaluation during hiring and promotion. Stephen will talk about his experiences with bioRxiv\, the main preprint server in biology. His research group deposited their first preprint on bioRxiv in Feb 2014 and they now preprint all of their work prior to journal submission. \n\n  \n\nPreprints – Finding their place in scholarly research by Judy Luther \n\nThe rapid adoption of preprints across disciplines has shifted the landscape of scholarly publishing.  Preprints are part of a larger transition to include born digital works emerging from the scholarly workflow\, challenging assumptions\, altering reference points and raising questions about processes. \n\n  \n\nRegister for this recording \n\nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \n\nSlides \n\nOur speakers have kindly agreed to make their slides available. SUMMARY:Free UKSG webinar - Better together: building services for public good on top of content from the global network of open repositories
DESCRIPTION:CORE hosts the world’s largest collection of open access full texts\, offering seamless\, unrestricted access to research for citizens\, researchers\, libraries\, software developers\, funders and others. CORE’s aggregated content comes from thousands of institutional and subject repositories as well as journals and covers all research disciplines. In January 2019\, CORE has hit the mark of 10 million monthly active users (10.41 million users). In September 2019\, core.ac.uk has made it to the top 5k websites globally by user engagement as measured by the independent Alexa Rank\, making it clearly one of the world’s most widely used Open Access services. \nIn this talk\, Petr and Nancy will explain the role of CORE in the open science ecosystem. They will introduce the solutions CORE offers for improving the delivery of research literature\, including tools for discovering freely available copies of papers that might be behind publishers’ paywalls as well as a recommender system for open access literature. The use of CORE data to monitor compliance with open access policies has also recently received attention. The presenters will then reflect on the challenges in the sector and share their experience of building value-added services for the society on top of open content offered by libraries and their affiliated institutional repositories and open access journals. \nRegister for this recording \nYou may still register for the recording of the webinar by visiting the GoToWebinar site. \nSlides \nPetr Knoth and Nancy Pontika have kindly agreed to make their slides available after their presentation. You may download them from here. Please use the correct attribution if you wish to refer to them. \nQ&A \nPlease\, find here the Q&A document that our speakers have kindly put together. \n  \n  \n

The transfer of metadata from these institutions is done through a number of regional\, national\, domain and thematic aggregators. To have their collections published online\, we have developed a data model\, Europeana Data Model\, that brings together specifications of other metadata formats\, adds contextual information to the records and contributes to their publication as linked open data. \n\nThis session will cover briefly our recommendations for metadata quality\, the possibilities of enhancement of certain fields and the various data re-use opportunities.

Using the results of their recent study\, they will consider whether the global data on open access activity offered by services such as Sherpa REF\, CORE and Unpaywall can enhance publication data held within institutional systems. These results will assist discussion of how local\, institutional systems may be able to provide a more complete picture of collaborative OA activity through greater interoperability with global data services.
