DESCRIPTION:This one-day seminar is aimed at librarians who want to gain an understanding of the different activities involved in financial planning for resources within an academic library and an awareness of the challenges facing the wider sector that can have an impact on library budgeting. Presentations and case studies will provide a range of differing viewpoints on what is involved in financial planning\, with an emphasis in the afternoon on the specific challenges arising from managing open access payments. There will be opportunities throughout the day for group discussion and for delegates to share and discuss challenges they are facing at their own institutions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeminar level and previous knowledge required \n\n\n\n\n\nThis seminar is designed for those who are new to financial planning or for those who need an update. Understanding the library’s use of this data is also vital for publishers.   Advances in standardisation led by the COUNTER initiative have made statistics more accessible and reliable as a basis for decision making. \n\n\n\nIncreasingly\, libraries are being asked to make extremely difficult decisions about the priorities for their spending within a strategic context.  Although this presents huge challenges\, it can also be an impetus to change the ways in which services are provided. She has strategic responsibility for collection management\, support for research publishing and digital resources discovery and access. She has been a librarian for over 20 years and a manager within Higher Education for 15 years\, she chartered in 1999. Vicki began her career as a subject librarian for applied design courses and then took a side step into eLearning Management\, first at Staffordshire and then for 7 years at Nottingham Trent\, before moving back into library management.  She is a Senior Fellow of the HEA\, and a Staffordshire University Teaching Excellence Fellow\, and is a member of the UKSG Education and Events Sub-Committee. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10.30 \n\n\n\n\n\nEngagement analytics: new methodologies for demonstrating value beyond usage \n\n\n\nFor many years libraries and publishers have been working with and using usage statistics as core metrics in decision making\, but usage data on their own give libraries and publishers very little insight into how content is being used or how much it is being looked at.  Libraries are becoming increasingly interested in other metrics that may give an indication of the extent to which library users engage with and value the resources they provide.  This presentation will provide some examples of how engagement analytics have informed decision making at Nottingham Trent University Library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHelen Adey  \n\n\n\nNottingham Trent University \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nHelen Adey is Resource Acquisition and Supply Team Manager at Nottingham Trent University. She leads the teams responsible for the acquisition of all library stock; Interlibrary Loans\, document supply and digitisation. Helen is a past Chair of the IFLA Standing Committee for Serials and Other Continuing Resources; participates in a number of Publisher Library Advisory Boards and is a member of the Journals Group for the Neyal Purchasing Consortium. She has a keen interest in library use of evidence based decision making tools and user engagement analytics and has presented widely on these topics. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n11:10 \n\n\n\n\n\nBeyond Counter: what else counts? \n\n\n\nIn everything from collection management to journal evaluation\, libraries are engaging in evidence-based decision making\, but do they have all the evidence?  Comparing COUNTER JR1 and JR5 reports when assessing journal subscriptions can already provide an interesting story\, but what happens when you factor in additional data points such as citations\, publications and more?  The growth of open access publishing demands that libraries look beyond usage statistics and incorporate additional metrics into their value assessment exercises. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKai Geschuhn \n\n\n\nMax Planck Digital Library \n\n\n\n\n\nSee Biography\nKai Geschuhn holds a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the Berlin Humboldt University. At the Max Planck Digital Library\, she works at the interface between license management and open access. She is part of the negotiating teams for Max Planck’s offsetting agreements and she promotes OA2020\, the ESAC initiative aiming at the transition of the current subscription system to open access business models. This is followed by in-depth presentations on three key areas: \n\n\n\n\nDiscovery Services looks at the range of different search services\, including Resource Discovery Systems\, library catalogues\, search engines\, A&I databases\, and scholarly sharing sites such as ResearchGate.\n\n\n\nNavigation and Linking covers technologies and standards that link users from their search results to full-text content\, including persistent identifiers and DOIs\, link resolvers\, and OpenURLs.\n\n\n\nAuthentication outlines the services that enable users to login to online resources such as IP access\, referring URLs and Shibboleth\, as well as discussing how to support a more seamless access experience for users.\n\n\n\n\nEach presentation will be followed by a breakout session where delegates will work in small groups to discuss real-world troubleshooting scenarios\, relating the concepts covered in the presentations to their day-to-day work\, and learning from sharing practical experiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend \n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be valuable to anyone responsible for supporting discovery and delivery services for e-resources\, or who is seeking a basic introduction to some of the technology services that support scholarly communications. The focus is on applications in libraries\, and throughout the day the speakers will address challenges faced by different types of libraries\, including HE\, FE and corporate. \n\n\n\nThe seminar will discuss a range of technologies supporting discovery and delivery\, but it will not compare specific library systems and solutions.
