He worked as a reference librarian at East Carolina University and at the University of Washington\, before founding Serials Solutions with two brothers and a high school friend in 2000. He left Serials Solutions (by then part of ProQuest) in 2009\, and started ShipIndex.org\, a website that helps people do research in maritime history. Peter received the Ulrichs Serials Librarianship Award in 2011\, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina School of Information & Library Science in 2012.
