The CONSER first encountered such a problem in the late 1980s with the appearance of CD-ROMs which could contain as many as 2,000 titles; in the late 1990s the problem recurs with online databases. An ALA working party was set up in 1998 to explore the options, and to report and make recommendations to the Policy Committee of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging. Details: John J.
