UKSG announces successful applicant for the inaugural John Merriman Award
UKSG, the organisation that connects the information community, is very happy to announce the successful applicant for its inaugural John Merriman Award. Mitchell Dunkley, Principal Information Assistant in the Bibliographic Services Team at De Montfort University in Leicester, will receive funding to attend the 2010 NASIG Conference in Palm Springs, California.
The John Merriman Award, set up in recognition of the founder of both UKSG and NASIG (North American Serials Interest Group), enables UKSG and NASIG members working at a practical level in e-resource management to learn and share experiences with colleagues from around the world, by providing funding for one member of each organisation to attend the other organisation’s annual conference. Applicants for the award were required to write a paper on an e-resource management issue, and to provide references from colleagues.
“Mitchell completed a very strong application that reflected UKSG’s aims, for example, by demonstrating innovation and initiative, a practical approach to the application and dissemination of knowledge learned at conferences, and a track record of networking and exchanging ideas,” comments Kate Price, UKSG Education Officer and Head of E-Strategy & Resources at the University of Surrey Library. “We wish him a successful and worthwhile trip to California – and look forward to welcoming NASIG’s winner to the UKSG conference in April. I’m particularly pleased that John Merriman himself will be joining us there to celebrate the award’s inauguration and to congratulate both winners.”
“Since becoming increasingly involved in serials and e-resources management within DMU Library Service, I have turned to UKSG conferences, training events and publications for updates on initiatives, technologies and other developments in scholarly information,” adds Mitchell Dunkley. “UKSG affords me the opportunity to network effectively with colleagues from other HE institutions and commercial partners, whilst helping me gain a wider appreciation of the library and publishing sectors. I’m very excited that I now have the opportunity to compare and contrast work processes and developments with fellow US practitioners attending the NASIG Conference."
The John Merriman award is partially underwritten by Taylor & Francis. For more information, please visit http://www.uksg.org/events/merrimanaward
